Who and what is nomad writing & editing?
Writing for me has always been like breathing: natural, uninhibited, requiring no thinking. In school I used to cringe for fellow students who had difficulty putting their thoughts to paper. But then, I've never been very good at drawing. Teachers used my work as bad examples.
We all have our strengths. Mine is telling your story so that it's compelling for your clients. And at the same time, expressing your philosophy and goals. It's a win-win situation. Plus I get to write! How cool is that?
A few clients have commented that I seem to have an uncanny knack for pulling the essence of a piece from very little information. I assure you, it's not witchcraft, but years spent gently nudging great stories from engineers and others who insist what they do "is nothing special ... just doing my job."
Over the years, I've gravitated toward the slightly technical, the medical, and the off-center. Probably that's my gypsy blood -- we just can't stop dancing. I love to play with words. One of my earliest proclaimed heroines is Ursula LeGuin. She was the first writer whose work I read had rhythm and song and color. Now I tell people my writing is only ready when it trips across the mind like the sound of water spilling over stones. Good writing is soul music, I believe. Every business and every person has a right to that expression. Just because you sell bonds doesn't mean your company profile has to be dry and brittle. We need more beauty in the world.
Lest you read this and think, 'oh, no, one of those flowery, frou-frou writers, in love with adjectives,' etc. etc., let me assure you, I spent nearly 10 years with a company at the top of its industry. Of that time, for 7 years I started, led and co-managed a highly successful marketing communications department. Several of my employees went on to rewarding career posts with larger companies. Not only I, but the entire group (we were 3, on average) gained a company-wide reputation for keenly honed strategies. On numerous occasions we were consulted by senior staff and executives for advice. We achieved high respect in an industry known for marginalizing our type of work. We created award-winning programs, inspired employees and earned a reputation as one of the most effective groups of our kind.
Two keys you should know about me:
- I am always seeking connections and asking, "why?" This has proven invaluable in understanding clients' business systems and their relationship to the project at hand.
- My clients are consistently impressed with my ability to get to the essence of a message with little information and in highly technical areas.
I love what I do. But that's because I love making your company and its products or services shine. Really shine. The way you intended them to be perceived.
